So, I did just okay on my September TBR. I definitely went rogue! This time I’m going to try and read more than just two books from my October 2024 TBR. I’m mostly caught up on more recent ARCs, but I still have a handful of backlog ones. I also know part of my October 2024 TBR will have some SFINCS novellas, but I pick those based on my mood. In summary, I plan to focus once again on ARCs this month as well as SFINCS reads.
Priority Reads
INVISIBLE LABOR by Rachel Somerstein: As I mentioned in my last WWW Wednesday post, I’m slowly working my way through this one. I’m over 50% through it now, but it’s not a quick read. It is, however, very interesting.
THE LAND OF THE LIVING AND THE DEAD by Shauna Lawless: I’m “overdue” with this ARC, but apparently that’s my pattern with this series. Regardless, I’m looking forward to diving back into this world. I love the mesh of historical fiction with folklore.
THE INSIDE STORY OF THE BRITISH BUREAU FOR THE ARCANE by Phil Parker: A year ago Phil featured me on his blog as part of his “Meet the Bloggers” series. He kindly reached out to me a couple of months ago offering an ARC of this book, which just came out a couple of days ago. It’s more of a fantasy mystery, which is a bit out of the norm for me, but I can be adventurous! I really love the cover. “For Arlo Austin, a loyal but troubled agent for the Bureau, something is wrong. When he’s sent to protect the citizens of the Shetland Isles from rampaging Norwegian trolls, it soon becomes apparent it was an attempt on his life.” As of now it’s only $1.31 on Amazon, which sounds like a steal to me!
And, of course, I still have ARCs of THE CITY OF STARDUST by Georgia Summer and HIM by Geoff Ryman that I need to read. And some SFINCS novellas will join this list once I decide which ones to read this month.
Hopeful Reads
THE SCHOLAR AND THE LAST FAERIE DOOR by H.G. Parry: Well, imagine that, another ARC! Faerie is in the title? Count me in! Set in the gilded age in England right after WWI, Clover needs to find a cure for her brother, a survivor of a faerie attack during the war. It’s “a mythic, magical tale full of secret scholarship, faerie curses, and the deadliest spells of all–the ones that friends cast on each other.“
BETWEEN DRAGONS AND THEIR WRATH by Devin Madson: I have a complimentary finished copy of this from Orbit. The cover is so stunning. It’s “a new sweeping epic fantasy full of dragons, alchemical magic, and forbidden romance that unfolds as three people in a shattered empire become entangled in a looming revolution.“
THE BLACK HUNGER by Nicholas Pullen: I received a physical ARC from Orbit of this spooky season read. I don’t read a ton of horror, but the description of this one pulled me in. “A spine-tingling, queer gothic horror debut where two men are drawn into an otherworldly spiral, and a journey that will only end when they reach the darkest part of the human soul.“
Let me know if any of these books are on your October 2024 TBR, or if you’ve read any of them!
City Of Stardust is actually my current read and I’m really enjoying it so far. The writing is beautiful and tone wise it feels very fitting for the season. I still need to start the Shauna Lawless series but the folklore./history combination sounds fantastic. Your three hopefuls are on my TBR too, although not necessarily for this month. I hope you have a lovely October and good luck catching up on your ARCs.
I’m about 25% in right now and also am really enjoying it…I’m so intrigued by what’s going on and the author is really withholding a lot of information. Can’t wait to find out what’s going on!
I hope you continue to enjoy it 🤞 I certainly found it an interesting read and am now incredibly excited to check out the authors next novel.
I’m going to be reading The Black Hunger as well, and I’d love to find time for The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door. Good luck with your plans!
As soon as I finish the three books I have going right now I’ll pick up The Black Hunger, lol!! Book blogging has turned me into someone who reads more than one book at a time.
I think I’ll have to look into The Inside Story. It sounds intriguing. 🙂
I hope you like it if you do pick it up! 🙂
