Well, I wouldn’t say August feels calmer than July even though I don’t have any trips planned. However, I feel like I’m a little back in the swing of things with my reading. So it’s nice to feel like I’m making some sort of progress! It’s always a juggling act trying to do it all between work, cooking, laundry, socializing, gardening, and reading. Yesterday after work I spent about 1.5 hours sowing various root vegetables and leafy greens in preparation for fall gardening. (All that to say gardening is work as well as a fun hobby!) Anyway, enough of my jabbering…let’s get on to WWW Wednesday.

SEA OF TRANQUILITY by Emily St. John Mandel: Well, last week I said I’d probably reach for one of my new storm chaser romances. But I definitely went rogue and chose something completely different. I’m about half way through and it’s interesting, but the shoe hasn’t dropped yet. So I’m eager to see what all the fuss is about with this book. “The award-winning, best-selling author of Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel returns with a novel of art, time travel, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon five hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.“

DAUGHTER OF THE OTHERWORLD by Shauna Lawless: I’m 9 months late with this ARC, but better let than never, or so they say. As usual, this was an excellent historical fantasy by Lawless. I posted my review on Monday, if you missed it. There are some light spoilers for the previous related trilogy. As soon as I sent my feedback in on NetGalley I requested the next book. Happily, the publisher approved my request yesterday!

TOWER OF DAWN by Sarah J. Maas: It’s getting close to the next ACOTAR book, so back to the obligatory reading pile I go! (No spoilers please. This is my first read through.)
HOUSE OF ROOTS AND RUIN by Erin Craig: I have a couple of audiobooks on loan, this being one of them. I listened to HOUSE OF SALT AND SORROWS by Craig and it wasn’t bad. I’ll probably feel similarly about this one. “A modern masterpiece, this is a classic Gothic thriller-fantasy from bestselling author Erin A. Craig, about doomed love, menacing ambition, and the ghosts that haunt us forever.“
THE GIVER by Lois Lowry: For some reason I just felt like rereading this. It’s been so long since I first read it in school that I don’t remember most of it. There’s a chance I’ll read this first before the YA fantasy one above since there’s a waitlist for it. “In Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal–winning classic, twelve-year-old Jonas lives in a seemingly ideal world. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver does he begin to understand the dark secrets behind his fragile community.“
I remember my kids having to read The Giver, but I don’t think I ever read it. Sea of Tranquility is one of my favorite books ever, but it does tie in with The Glass Hotel so if you haven’t read that it might not have the same impact. I’m very curious to see what you think!
Well, I guess I’ll have to read THE GLASS HOTEL at some point. I didn’t feel like I was missing anything when I read SEA OF TRANQUILITY, but perhaps that’s why I didn’t feel like TRANQUILITY was mind blowing.
I enjoyed Sea of Tranquility but it wasn’t desperately memorable for me. I’m never as keen on stories that span ages as you never seem to spend long enough in one place or time to really understand it
Yea, I enjoyed it, but ultimately it wasn’t a hard hitting scifi for me.
The husband and I have loved gardening this year! We always did “container” gardening and it always had terrible results. This year, we went with an in ground garden box and it’s been a game changer. We are ordering two more for next year and just got raspberry bushes on clearance! haha. We are loving it so much.
I’ve not had a lot of success with “container” gardening, either. The best I did with it was potatoes, but over time some bug got in the soil and started ruining my potatoes and that was that lol. I’m glad you’re having much better results with an in-ground garden box. I’ve always had much better results that way, too–we have many raised-ish garden beds.
Rereading The Giver sounds like a great idea! I read it again years ago when one of my kids had to read it for school, and then realized that I’d never read the sequels so I read those too! I loved Sea of Tranquility… but I feel like her books are an experience that I only fully appreciate once I get to the end.
I don’t think I’ve read the sequels either, for The Giver. Or maybe I read one of them, I’m not sure. It’s been so long!
