Book Blogger Hop: Following Reading Trends

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

This Week’s Question

Do you follow book trends and bestsellers, or do you prefer hunting down lesser-known titles?

I don’t consciously follow book trends, but I don’t not-follow book trends. I know romantasy is a huge, money-making trend right now. But the only reason I know this is because I’d already been reading in that subgenre for several years and saw it blow up over the last year or two. Now, if you asked me if I know what the trend is within romantasy, I have no idea. I couldn’t tell you if it’s still all about shadow daddies or if the subgenre has moved more to shifters. (Although, I think shifter romances or romances with inanimate objects are having some sort of moment? But I’m not entirely sure?) Have the fae taken a back seat to other fantasy species? Again, no idea. And, to be perfectly frank, I’ve moved a little bit away from romantasy because a lot of the newer stuff started to blend together synopsis-wise.

I have a similar answer with respect to following bestsellers. Actually, I think I know even less about what’s on a bestseller list. Something has to be really big for me to notice it outside of the fantasy genre. A good example would be YESTERYEAR, which I hope to get to later this month. Another example is NOBODY’S GIRL by Virginia Giuffre.

When it comes to lesser-known titles, I don’t hunt those down, either. However, when something out of the norm crosses my path and somehow tickles a niche interest, why yes, I do save it to my Goodreads. By niche I mean pandemic nonfiction or fiction or even some climate fiction. One I’m thinking of right now is THE WILDCRAFT DRONES by T.K. Rex, though I have yet to purchase it.

This is all a long way of saying I’m a mood reader, so of course I don’t follow trends!

  1. The only reason I know about trends is because people occasionally post about them 😃I do look at the best sellers in the Sunday papers every week but the list doesn’t influence my reading at all. I’m far more likely to be influenced by a pretty cover in the book shop.
