Surprisingly, this month is shaping up to be a decent reading month in terms of number of books read. I can thank the SFINCS competition for that since it’s a lot easier to read more novellas than novels in a given month. Anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to, more or less, in the past week!
WWW Wednesday was revived and hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. The idea is to answer the three questions below and leave a link to your post in the comments for others to look at. No blog? No problem! Just leave a comment with your responses.
What are you currently reading?
What have you just finished reading?
What are you going to read next?
Currently Reading
INVISIBLE LABOR by Rachel Somerstein: I’m still slowly working my way through this ARC. Intersectionality features prominently, which is great. But it also means it brings together a lot of history and how that plays out today. It’s a lot to take in, which slows me down some. It’s not so much a dense read in that it’s boring, rather that I’m trying to somewhat remember what I read.
I WANT TO DIE BUT I WANT TO EAT TTEOKBOKKI by Baek Sehee: I mainly picked this one up because it was “available now” on Libby and the audiobook is very short. So far it’s just an ok read for me. I don’t mind the format so much, which is basically a transcription of the author’s therapy sessions. It’s just not doing much for me. I plan to finish it, though, because it’s easy to listen to while doing chores around the house.
FORGET ME NOT by Julie Soto: After I enjoyed Soto’s most recent book, NOT ANOTHER LOVE SONG, so much, I decided to borrow this one from the library. I’m about one third of the way through and like it so far. It’s not feeling as magical to me as her latest book, but I’m still invested. Let’s just say I like it enough to keep going. However, I’m very much ready to get to the story about why the two main characters broke up several years prior to the current plotline.
Recently Finished
THE BOOK OF PURRS by Luis Coelho: As expected, this was super cute. This comic book comes out next month, so expect my review then.
A VERY PUNCHABLE FACE by Colin Jost: This was a nice, light audiobook read. I’ve now realized that a decent number of Saturday Night Live comedians have memoirs, so I think I’ll slowly work my way through them.
FOR THE THRONE by Hannah Whitten: I’m very happy I read this to finish out the duology! I don’t know that I liked it as much as the first book, but the ending fit. I forgot a lot of the story since I read the first one three years ago. And perhaps I also just wasn’t in the most receptive frame of mind when I read it. By that I mean the magic concept was all riddle-y and I just wasn’t as up for it as I could’ve been. But it also means I crossed out another book in my Series Completion Challenge.
Reading Next
ODD SPIRITS by S.T. Gibson: My complimentary copy from Angry Robot arrived in the mail a week or so ago and it’s gorgeous! Since it’s short and hits U.S. shelves on October 8, I figured I might as well try to squeeze it in. It’s a prequel novella to the ongoing The Summoner’s Circle series. My review for the first book of that series is here.
I’m also slowly reading various SFINCS novellas allocated to my team.
Sorry to hear you’re not enjoying Tteokbokki – that one is on my TBR. I can see how transcriptions of therapy sessions might not be the most compelling format.
It was ok, just not exactly what I was expecting from the synopsis. I think I would’ve appreciated more of an interpretation from the author and more detail about how she applied her therapy sessions to her life.
I liked For the Wolf well enough but never really felt like picking up For the Throne, so I’m glad to hear I’m not missing out on an amazing second book.
Same here…I definitely think my appreciation for it was lessened by how long I went between reading it and the first book. I don’t really reread things simply because so many books, not enough free time!
I also received Odd Spirits, isn’t it gorgeous? I’m going to read it soon also. I can’t believe next week is October!
Yes, it’s so pretty! I’m so thankful they sent out finished copies, which I wasn’t expecting.
The Book of Purrs looks brilliant. I loved For the Wolf but the library never got For the Throne so I never got around to reading it. It’s so long now that I might not bother even if I saw it on the shelf.
I’m sorry to hear that you’re not having a great time with one of your current reads. It’s lovely to hear that you’ve loved a Julie Soto book in the past though, especially as her 2025 one sounds super intriguing 😂 I’m sorry that the second For The Throne book wasn’t quite as good as book one. I still need to check that duology out. And I hope you enjoy Odd Spirits. That cover is absolutely stunning 😍
I had to look up what she’s releasing in 2025. If you mean Rose in Chains, then it looks really interesting!!
Yes that’s the one. I can’t wait to check it out & am also very excited to see what the cover will be like too.
The Book of Purrs was so cute!! Yea, I think a reread of For the Throne would be best before reading For the Wolf…but I didn’t do that because I don’t have enough free time. I try to use context clues when I get back into a series since I don’t reread often.
