I don’t have quite as much to recap this week compared to my last WWW Wednesday post. However, I do still want to share what I’ve been up to since I won’t review everything I read this month.
WWW Wednesday was revived and hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. The idea is to answer the three questions below and leave a link to your post in the comments for others to look at. No blog? No problem! Just leave a comment with your responses.

WITCHFUL THINKING by Celestine Martin: I won this in a publisher-backed book blogger giveaway a while ago and finally got around to starting it. It’s easy to read and entertaining enough. At >60% through, however, it feels safe to say that this isn’t blowing my socks off. In fact, I’m just a wee bit bored. The author writes the mechanics of the chemistry well (banter, etc.), but I just don’t feel it. They’re just taking their sweet old time to get to the point of discussing past hurt feelings. If I wasn’t reading this for Trope-ical Readathon, I’d probably DNF it. It’s not bad, but I’m not clicking with it like I want to.
THE MONUMENTS MEN by Robert M. Edsel: I’m slowly listening to this audiobook. It’s about 14 hours, which is about my limit for audiobooks. It’s about a group of men authorized to save or protect various cultural buildings during the fighting. They also retrieved and returned art that the Nazis stole.

LORE OF THE WILDS by Analeigh Sbrana: Oh, I had such high hopes for this! I had an ARC, then received it as a Fairyloot Romantasy subscription special edition (which is gorgeous). Then I read it and it fell so flat. I won’t get too much into it here since I actually wrote a review for this one. I’m sad that I didn’t appreciate it nearly as much as I hoped because it had so many elements that I like in romantasies.
DAYS AT THE MORISAKI BOOKSHOP by Satoshi Yagisawa: I keep picking up Japanese-translated literature in the hopes that I’ll find one that I click with. Alas, once again this was not the case. In fact, this is my least favorite of all of the ones I can remember reading. I often feel that the emotions, lessons, etc. are too subdued or subtle for me when it comes to books translated from Japanese. Of course, maybe I haven’t found the right one yet. Stepping back, the story itself is a nice one: woman experiences infidelity, finds herself again working at her uncle’s bookshop, and then goes back into the world. But the sexism in Japanese culture came out in several conversations and I was just over it.

I’ve had some average or dud reads recently, so I really hope I like my next one more. I’ll pick from my Trope-ical Readathon list. At the moment I’m leaning toward YELLOWFACE. But I make no promises since I’m a mood reader. Another contender is THESE TWISTED BONDS.
What are you reading? Do tell!
I found that I couldn’t really connect with Morisaki Bookshop too. I agree about the emotions being very subtle and it just meant that I didn’t really feel for any of them.
I did enjoy Yellowface so hope that you do too if you choose to pick that one up.
Yes!! I’m glad I’m not the only one. My friend, who loaned me the book, also didn’t connect with it very much. I don’t plan on reading the sequel; someone in my book club said it’s the same vibes, which means I doubt I’ll like it much. As for Yellowface, I finished it on Sunday and enjoyed it!
I’ve read a couple of other Japanese books in translation and they all seem to have the same slightly distanced feel to them
I always hear really good things about Yellowface. I hope you enjoy it!
I finished it yesterday and did indeed enjoy Yellowface!
Sorry to hear about the dud reads—I totally feel you. I heard similar sentiments from several reviews I’d seen for Lore of the Wild so that immediately went off my TBR. I hate when books I don’t enjoy have such beautiful covers cos I want to keep them but also, shelf space is so precious! 😂 I hope you enjoy Yellowface—it has so much hype around it and I’ve heard incredible things. Happy reading!
Thankfully I broke my streak of dud reads with Yellowface, woohoo! I avoided any reviews of Lore of the Wild, but I started a group chat with some bloggers who’d read it and it was nice to know I wasn’t the only one that thought it was…ok. And Yellowface was great…you should read it!
I’ve heard of The Monuments Men and am curious about it! I do hope you enjoy Yellowface when you get around to it! 😀
I finished Yellowface on Sunday and it was great! Not sure if you’ve read it, but if not, I recommend it!
