July 2024 TBR

Welcome, July! Summer is in full swing. I know this means “hot,” but it also (hopefully) means I’ll start getting some vegetables ready for harvest. As usual, I’m back with a July 2024 TBR. After a break from fantasy in June I’m ready to jump back into it. Most of the books here are ARCs, but since I’m a mood reader I’m sure some of my July 2024 TBR will change. That’s par for the course for me! Now, let’s take a look at what’s on my July 2024 TBR.

Priority Reads

How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django WexlerPoison In Their Hearts by Laura SebastianThe Nightingale's Castle by Sonia VeltonThe Book of Purrs by Luis Coelho

HOW TO BECOME THE DARK LORD AND DIE TRYING by Django Wexler: Chris and I decided to buddy read this together, which is great because it’ll motivate me to cross off another ARC. (Although, technically, I have a complimentary finished copy from Orbit.) It looks like a lot of fun and I hope I like the style of humor in it.

POISON IN THEIR HEARTS by Laura Sebastian: This is the finale to the Castles in Their Bones trilogy. I was looking forward to requesting an ARC of this. But for whatever reason the publisher never put it on NetGalley in the U.S. So I ended up borrowing it from my library. I think it might have a short holds list on it, so I need to read it sooner rather than later. It’ll be nice to cross of another series for my Series Completion Challenge.

THE NIGHTINGALE’S CASTLE by Sonia Velton: This is a historical fiction ARC that I’ve already started. It’s a “feminist reimagining of the story of Erzsébet Báthory, the infamous sixteenth-century Hungarian aristocrat known as the ‘Blood Countess’, who was rumored to have murdered hundreds of peasant girls and bathed in their blood.” At the time I drafted this post I was more than 30% through it and enjoying it. I think I see what the feminist spin will be, so I’m interested to see how the author develops it.

THE BOOK OF PURRS by Luis Coelho: I have followed this comic on Instagram for several years now. I saw in passing that the author would be releasing a compilation of many of his comics in book form. While scrolling through NetGalley I happened to see this was “Read Now.” So I said to myself, “Well, don’t mind if I do!” It’s less than 100 pages and I’m looking forward to flipping through it. I’ve already read a few of the comic strips in it. It doesn’t come out until October, but I want to read it now, so I will!

Hopeful Reads

Invisible Labor by Rachel SomersteinLore of the Wilds by Analeigh SbranaThe City of Stardust by Georgia SummersHim by Geoff Ryan

INVISIBLE LABOR by Rachel Somerstein: I’ve mentioned before that I have an interest in women’s health. Goodness knows I have a small pile of books I’ve purchased about this topic that I need to read. But who am I to pass up another one on NetGalley? At least I know having an ARC of it will encourage me to read it much sooner than the ones I bought on my own, ha! “An incisive yet personal look at the science and history of the most common surgery performed in America–the cesarean section–and an exposé on the disturbing state of maternal medical care.”

Again, for the sake of brevity, here are the titles only of some long-standing ARCs that I need to read. My approach now is to read upcoming ARCs and double back when I can to older ones.

LORE OF THE WILDS by Analeigh Sbrana

THE CITY OF STARDUST by Georgia Summer

HIM by Geoff Ryman

And, as usual, I’m sure I’ll throw in an audiobook or two during the month. I never know what I might pick up on that front. It all depends on what’s “available now” on Libby when I decide it’s time for a new audiobook.

  1. It seems like a good mix of books, so you’ll have lots of choices for mood reading. I’ll have to check out The Book of Purrs!

  2. I hope you enjoy whichever of these you get to, as well as anything else you read if you decide you want to pick up something else. I’ve meant to read the Laura Sebastian series for years and hope the finale is a hit with you. I’m hoping to pick up Stardust City this month but it depends when my library copy arrives. And I’m also super intrigued by Nightingales Castle. It’s wonderful that you’re lovely it so far. Hope you have a fantastic July.

    1. If you don’t want to commit to one of Laura Sebastian’s series just yet, then check out HALF SICK OF SHADOWS! It’s a standalone set in Arthurian times and has a feminist POV. It’s beautiful. I cried even though from the first chapter you know what will happen.

      1. Omg I completely forgot about that one even though I own it ???????? thanks for the reminder. I’ll make sure I pick it up soon. It sounds amazing I love beautifully written books ???? I’m glad you found it so lovely.
