Nonfiction November Week 2: Book Pairing

First, thanks to Sahi at My World of Books to alerting me to yet another bookish event occurring during November. I saw her response to the Nonfiction November second week prompt pop up Twitter and thought I’d give it a go. Consider me on the fringes of several of the events ongoing this month–Nonfiction November, NetGalley November, and SciFi Month.

So what is Nonfiction November? It’s a month long (approximately) event that runs from October 31 to December 2 during which we celebrate nonfiction reads. There are five hosts: Katie at Doing Dewey, Rennie at What’s Nonfiction, Jaymi at The OC Bookgirl, Christopher at Plucked from the Stacks, and Rebekah at She Seeks Nonfiction. Social media hashtags to use are #NonficNov and #NonfictionBookParty.

SciFi Month: Space Opera

For my first foray into the world of SciFi Month prompts (aside from my November hopefuls), today’s is about the space opera subgenre. I had not heard about this subgenre until about one or two months ago. So, in case you’re like me, here’s a great definition from Wikipedia:

Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes science fictional space warfare, with use of melodramatic, risk-taking space adventures, relationships, and chivalric romance. Set mainly or entirely in outer space, it features technological and social advancements (or lack thereof) in faster-than-light travel, futuristic weapons, and sophisticated technology, on a backdrop of galactic empires and interstellar wars with fictional aliens, often in fictional galaxies.

Some well known space operas are Star Wars and the updated Battlestar Galactica show. Today, however, I’m featuring a book marketed as a space opera. (I’ll be surprised if I’m the only one to mention this book today!) It just so happens that this will be my first jump back into a scifi book in well over a year. At the time I’m scheduling this post I haven’t technically started it yet, but I plan to very shortly!

Top 5 Books Featuring Wyrd and Wonder Mascots

We’ve had five gorgeous mascots so far: dragon, phoenix, pegasus, raven and wolf. Share some favourite books that feature (one of) these beauties on the cover, as a character or as part of the world-building. Mix and match mascots or focus a top five on your favourite.

Mythothon Round 6 Wrap-Up

Last month I participated in my second readathon, the sixth round of Mythothon. I thought after enjoying the Trope-ical Readathon in March I’d try a second round. If you missed my Mythothon announcement post, you can see what books I chose for my line up here.

April ended up being a slightly slower reading month for me than March. I completed three of the five books on my Mythothon TBR, not including the Team book by Agatha Christie. Two of these three books I read were ARCs from NetGalley. I’ve been trying really hard the first half of this year to try and get through most, preferably all, of my ARCs.

The three books I completed are:

Wyrd and Wonder: Woodland Creatures

Today’s Wyrd and Wonder prompt is woodland creatures. The idea is to share cover art featuring (were)wolves, stags/deer, unicorns, owls, the Fae or other woodland residents. Alternatively, you could share your favorite stories featuring woodland creatures; creatures you think of as being particularly fantastic (why?); or favorite woodland creature characters.
