Wow, April was the last time I participated in the Book Blogger Hop. I cut back on these a while ago, but I didn’t realize my last one was eight months ago! Nonetheless, they’re nice for weekly prompt ideas. So, here I am back to talk about reading slumps.
The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

This Week’s Question
How do you deal with reading slumps or moments when you can’t get into a book? (Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)
Thankfully, I don’t experience reading slumps often. When I feel one threatening to come on, I usually switch to a different genre and that tends to do the trick. Since I read mostly fantasy, it doesn’t surprise me that occasionally I start to burn out on them and need a genre change for a book or two. My other trick is I pick a book that I’ve been wanting to read for a while.
When I start a book, I usually try to stick with it until I finish it. Lately I’ve been trying to have no more than two books started at a time: one-ish per medium (audiobook or ebook/physical). If I can’t get into an ARC, I give it a fair chance before I DNF it. It’s rare that I do that because I only request books these days that I’m genuinely interested in and would probably buy on my own. If it’s a book borrowed from the library, I might set it down and come back to it. However, I feel less guilty about DNF those. But, again, if I start a library book I tend to finish it because I check out books I want to read.
How do you deal with reading slumps?
Thankfully, I also don’t get into reading slumps that often and as a mood reader I’m counting my blessings cos my mood can be so fickle! 🤣 When it does happen though I also change up genres or find a different format to read. Graphic novels are also great for something quick and (relatively) painless to get you back into a reading groove. Novellas and audiobooks have also helped me in the past since I don’t regularly read many of those! Great discussion post 🙂
I’ve tried graphic novels, but I don’t know if they’re for me! I think I might like YA or middle grade ones more, maybe? The last one I tried was about a socio-political topic and I learned that is not how I can consume that information haha…I need words, not pictures. But I can see the appeal of graphic novels.
