Wow, look at me participating in another book meme for the second time in a week! Don’t get used to it! 😉 I’m back this time to answer another Book Blogger Hop weekly prompt.
The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

This Week’s Question
In elementary school, did you participate in the Book-It! reading program? (Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)
You bet I did! While my memory of that time in my life isn’t as sharp as it used to be, I nonetheless have fond memories of that program. I loved filling out that little blue booklet with all of the books I read. Then I’d earn a certificate for a personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut. This was back when Pizza Hut used to have sit-down restaurants. (Do any still exist?) I loved getting a pepperoni and olive pizza. My Mom loved the salad bar. It was a nice outing for a young family.
Just as importantly, this program encouraged kids to read. I already loved to read. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the rewards-based system was a big motivator for those who weren’t naturally inclined readers. I can’t remember what or if there were any other rewards. The pizza was the prize. Plus it also got me to go to our library, which I used a lot, especially in middle school.
What good memories!
You know, I hear people talk about this program all the time, and I genuinely do not remember if I actually did it. I remember going to Pizza Hut, but I don’t know if it was related to the coupons!
I’d be very surprised if you hadn’t done the Book It program while you were a kid! At least where I was it was definitely a thing at least mentioned in school, if not mentioned regularly. Libraries also had volunteers stamping booklets, etc. to get those coveted Pizza Hut vouchers!
My school had the AR program, where every time you finish reading a book you take a quiz on the computer and earns. After a curtain amount of points you get a free book.
That program was the only reason I read in elementary school. Otherwise I wasn’t much of a reading until high school.
I’ve seen others mention the AR program, but I don’t have any strong recollections about it. I’d be surprised if my school system didn’t have it. I do have a very vague memory of sitting at a computer taking a quiz about reading, so perhaps I did do it. But the Book It program is a strong memory for me that I have about reading! 🙂
Pizza as a prize for reading?! Can I sign up for this program as an adult? Haha, I don’t think we had anything like it at my school.
Haha I wish we could sign up as adults!
