I fully admit that I’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons in my life. However, I’m happy to jump on the recent trend of Dungeons and Dragons romance books. The best thing about these books is you don’t necessarily have to know too much about Dungeons and Dragons. As such, this broadens their appeal and makes it easy to enjoy both the romance and the in-story campaigns.
I love this trend so much that I decided to put together a short, albeit good, list of Dungeons and Dragons romance books. Each listing also links to my book review. I’m always on the look out for more of these types of books. So, if you’ve read and loved any that aren’t on this list, please feel free to let me know.

INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • When it comes to romance, sometimes it doesn’t hurt to play games. A fun YA romcom full of fake dating hijinks!
A COSMOPOLITAN BEST YOUNG ADULT BOOK OF THE YEAR
No one loves musicals more than Riley Morris—her dream is to be a Broadway director. But when the spring show is canceled, Riley has to figure out a way to bring it back. Easier said than done—she’s stuck working at her dad’s game store. The place that means more to him than his family does.
Riley can’t waste time at a dead-end job when her entire future is resting on making a name for herself. So she convinces her co-worker Nathan Wheeler—the floppy-haired, glasses-wearing guy she barely knows from school—to help her. In exchange, she’ll help him make his gamer-girl crush jealous. Plus it won’t hurt to show her egotistical ex, Paul, just what he’s missing without her.
Soon Riley and Nathan are “a couple,” and people seem to believe it. But selling the ruse means joining Nathan’s role-playing game. To Riley’s surprise, the game is almost fun. And even more surprising, flirting with Nathan doesn’t require as much acting as she thought it would. . . .

Synopsis
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Dungeons and Drama comes another gaming romance that’s sure to win you over!
Quinn Norton is starting over at a new high school and hopes that joining a D&D game will be the trick to making friends. The plan sounds even better when she’s invited into a group that includes Logan Weber, the cute and charming guy she met on her first day of class. But this isn’t your average D&D campaign— this group livestreams their games and enforces strict rules: no phones allowed, and no dating other group members.
Quinn is willing to accept the rules, even if it makes Logan off-limits. And she quickly learns that doing so won’t be a problem, since Logan goes from charismatic to insufferable as soon as she agrees to join. As their bickering—and bantering—intensifies inside and outside the game, Quinn can’t help wondering: Is Logan’s infuriating behavior a smokescreen for hidden feelings? Quinn is risking it all, and the twenty-sided dice are rolling!

A second-chance queer romance about two teens whose in-world D&D characters fall in love, but in IRL . . . things are more complicated, perfect for lovers of Ashley Poston and Becky Albertalli.
Harper Reid’s summer is not off to a great start. After the death of her grandpa, she moves across the country, leaving her friends and Dungeons & Dragons group behind. She wasn’t exactly planning to start her senior year on the farm where she spent her childhood summers, but running into Ollie Shifflet–former best friend and first crush–makes things much better. When Harper discovers Ollie and her friends are starting a new D&D campaign, she quickly joins the group. As Harper and Ollie reconnect in the real world, romantic tension begins to build between Harper’s brash barbarian and Ollie’s proud paladin, but it’s all just part of the game . . . right?
Ollie’s future depends on keeping her bisexuality private while Harper’s dreams include an out-and-proud life in their rural town, but as their feelings continue to grow with each gaming session, their relationship begins threatening everything they’ve worked so hard to build. As the school year comes to a close and the campaign’s final boss looms on the horizon, Harper and Ollie must decide: are their feelings more than just a fantasy? Because if they want a second chance at love, they’ll have to fight for it, both in-game and in real life.

Synopsis
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A merchant’s daughter who yearns for adventure gets more than she bargained for when she falls for a broodingly handsome stranger in this saucy romantasy from the author of The Hurricane Wars.
This gorgeous hardcover edition features beautiful designed endpapers and a reversible jacket with in-world fan art by Jester Lavorre.
As the daughter of an ambitious merchant, Guinevere’s path has been predetermined: marry into a noble house of the Dwendalian Empire, raise her family’s station, and live quietly as a lordling’s obedient wife. But Guinevere longs for a life unbounded by expectations, for freedom and passion and adventure.
Those distant dreams become a sudden reality when her caravan is beset by bandits, leaving her guards slain and Guinevere stranded alone on the dangerous Amber Road. Her only chance of survival is to travel alongside Oskar, the aloof half-orc who saved her during the attack.
Unlike Guinevere, Oskar’s path is not so set in stone. With his mother dead and his apprenticeship abandoned, all that’s left is a long, lonely walk to a land he’s never seen to find family he’s never met. The last thing he needs is a spoiled waif like Guinevere slowing him down—even if the spark between them sizzles with promise.
Despite his cold exterior, Oskar is brave and thoughtful and unlike anyone Guinevere has ever met. And while Guinevere may be sheltered, she brings out a softness in him that he has never dared to feel before. As the flames of their passion grow, they realize that soon they’ll need to choose between their expected destinations or their blossoming romance.
Written by New York Times bestselling author Thea Guanzon at the behest of Critical Role’s Jester Lavorre, Tusk Love brings the most romantic story on Exandrian bookshelves to life.

Synopsis
Two fledgling tabletop gamers find themselves falling for each other—both in and out of their weekly D&D sessions—in this cozy, fantasy-tinged romance.
When Sadie Brooks unexpectedly loses her marketing job, she flees New York City to spend the summer with her best friend in small-town Texas, where joining his Dungeons & Dragons campaign is the perfect distraction while she plans her next steps.
In the game, she becomes Jaylie, a powerful human cleric blessed by the Goddess of Luck. But in real life, Sadie believes her luck has run out—until she meets Noah Walker, the outgoing bartender roped into joining their party as Loren, an adventurous and charismatic lute-strumming elf. Just as Jaylie finds herself succumbing to the bard’s charms over the course of their party’s travels, Sadie also begins to fall under Noah’s spell.
As their relationship progresses in both worlds, Sadie wonders if what they have might last beyond the game. But like his traveling bard character, Noah never stays in one place for long. When a new opportunity arises in New York, Sadie must face the truth about why she lost her job in the first place—and whether she and Noah have found something in Texas worth staying for. Torn between her career dreams in the city and the exciting uncertainty of a new adventure, she will have no choice but to roll the dice.
And that’s a wrap on my list of Dungeons and Dragons romance books. I’m sure there are others out there of which I’m unaware, so let me know in the comments some of your favorites.

I did not realize this was a trend! You found quite a few. I’ve never played either, although I grew up with friends who were obsessed with it😁
It is! And I hope the trend continues!
All excellent books! I haven’t read Tusk Love yet, but I very much enjoyed all the other ones on your list. Very here for this trend.
Tusk Love is so good! I hope you like it when you get around to it.
I haven’t tried any D&D based romances but I’m saving this list to try some of the titled out in the future; romance is a genre I want to try and pick up more (or at all tbh) and it could be interesting to see how these go. I haven’t tried D&D ever but I was surprised to find myself loving the recent movie. Plus these books have such stunning covers 😍 it makes it hard not to want to pick them up 😂
I was also surprised at how much I liked the D&D movie. Tbh I wasn’t interested in watching, but my husband convinced me to (he’d already seen it) and he was right! It was fun movie.
I probably wouldn’t have seen it either but I used to have a cinema card and could go as often as I wanted for a monthly price so I ended up taking chances on more films. I’m glad we both ended up enjoying it so much. I was hoping they’d do more tbh as it was so much fun and balanced it’s humor with its narrative well.
Me too!! I want another movie, lol! I also thought the humor and narrative were well balanced.
Oh I love these! Ive read dating & dragon aswell as who we are in real life from Victoria Koops, loving them both !
I hope you’re able to read more D&D romances soon! 🙂 Thanks for the Koops rec.
I love this trend and can’t wait for more to come out.
Yessss…me too!
Fun list! More broadly, there are also a few romances about online gamers, notably Role Playing by Cathy Yardley, which I enjoyed very much.
i really wanna read roll for love! last summer i read another sapphic dnd romance called the no-girlfriend rule by christen randall that i absolutely loved and would highly recommend!
I haven’t heard of The No-Girlfriend Rule…thanks for the rec!!
