THE FRENCH INGREDIENT by Jane Bertch: I saw this book on one of the front table displays at B&N. I almost bought it, but ultimately decided to use the library to borrow it. So far I’m really enjoying it. The author’s first impression of Paris as a 17-year-old wasn’t the best. But she finds herself back there after taking a finance job in the city. As Bertch takes us through each chapter, there’s a theme about understanding French culture. “The inspiring and delicious memoir of an American woman who had the gall to open a cooking school in Paris—a true story of triumphing over French naysayers and falling in love with a city along the way.”
BABY X by Kira Peikoff: I’m not one for thrillers, but the comparison to Gattaca meets Black Mirror snagged my attention. So when I found it available via audiobook from my library, I hopped on it. So far it’s interesting with three POV to keep track of. This is a near future where babies are made with cheek cells, though there are “hold outs” who prefer to make babies the good ol’ fashioned way. As such, any hair or cells you leave behind can be stolen to make babies without your consent. “When any biological matter can be used to create life, stolen celebrity DNA sells to the highest bidder–or the craziest stalker–in this propulsive thriller.“

ASCENSION by S.T. Gibson: Well, this didn’t exactly turn out to be what I thought it would be. Spoilers for book 1: I thought it’d be a continuation of figuring out how to rid Rhys of the demon blood curse. Instead it was more like a character study of Rhys’s anxiety. This was ok. I think Chris liked it a little better than me, but we were both surprised at how long it took us to read. You can read my full review here.
THE PROJECT by David Graham: This was a good distillation of the 900-page manifesto that is Project 2025 into 150 pages or so. It’s a fairly accessible read and not too journalistic sounding. It was surreal to see that a bunch of stuff has already happened. This should be required reading for all Americans. “An urgent, topic-by-topic guide to Project 2025, with everything you need to know about how the second Trump administration is remaking America—from a go-to authority at The Atlantic.”

I have the same answer here as last week: HEIR OF FIRE by Sarah J. Maas. I have the memory of a gnat sometimes and meant to start this after finishing ASCENSION. But I got distracted by THE FRENCH INGREDIENT even though something was nagging at the back of my mind. That “something” was HEIR OF FIRE. This time it will be my next read.

The French Ingredient sounds really good. I follow a French woman on Instagram who lives in Paris and bakes and lives her best life with her dog, and it seems idyllic! Although I’m sure it’s much different if you’re an American in Paris.
It is pretty good! I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would.
I like the sound of The French Ingredient. I love Paris and it’s always great reading about people’s experiences. The Project definitely sounds as though it’s going to be a scary read especially as it’s actually happening around you.
Have a great week and hope that you manage to get to Heir of Fire.
I think you’d really like THE FRENCH INGREDIENT! If I didn’t have to work I’d be finished with it by now haha. Yeaaa it’s not fun living through all this project stuff. Pretty stressful, actually. 😭
For a variety of reasons (some Project 2025 related tbh) I’ve been absent from blogging for the past few weeks so didn’t realise that you were reading ToG, looking forward to opinions!
Sorry to see project stuff has been affecting your free time. 😢 Yep, I’ve been very slowly reading TOG. This is book 3, hoping to pick it up in the next day or two.
I can see why The French Ingredient caught your eye, that cover is stunning 😍😍 I’m glad you’re enjoying it so far. The thriller sounds interesting too. I’m sorry Ascension wasn’t what you’d hoped for though. And I really hope you enjoy Heir Of Fire. I’m sure you’ll manage to pick it up this week.
I know, it’s such a pretty cover! I ended up buying myself a copy after finishing the library one. So far I’m enjoying Heir of Fire. It’s nice that other POV have been introduced.
Aww that’s lovely. Sometimes that’s the best way to go about it too, then you know you’re getting a book that you definitely enjoyed to add to your shelves. I’m glad it’s going well so far. You do get a lovely mix of POVs throughout that series.
