WWW Wednesday: April 16, 2025

I missed last week’s WWW Wednesday because I was on travel for work. (It’s also why I was a little MIA with respect to blog hopping.) It’s not easy to edit posts in the Jetpack app, much less draft one, so I decided to just forego the update. Anyway, I’m back and as a result you get to see two weeks’ worth of reading! 😀

WWW Wednesday was revived and hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. The idea is to answer the three questions below and leave a link to your post in the comments for others to look at. No blog? No problem! Just leave a comment with your responses.

The Swans of Harlem by Karen ValbyMore: A Memoir of Open Marriage by Molly Roden Winter

THE SWANS OF HARLEM by Karen Valby: I’m always on the lookout for books about ballet, whether fiction or nonfiction. This is a nonfiction about some of the first Black professional ballerinas in the U.S. It follows five dancers starting 50 years ago. Spoiler: Misty Copeland isn’t the first professional Black ballerina. This is such an important book for dancers of color who feel marginalized in what is still mainly a White sport. “The forgotten story of a pioneering group of five Black ballerinas and their fifty-year sisterhood, a legacy erased from history—until now.

MORE: A MEMOIR OF OPEN MARRIAGE by Molly Winter: I saw this in B&N a little while ago and thought it looked interesting. So I definitely borrowed it when I saw it was available on Libby. The critiques on Goodreads are probably valid. But considering this is not my lifestyle I don’t really know enough about that community to really have an informed opinion. As an outsider looking in, though, it’s interesting to listen to someone come to terms with wanting an open marriage (since that’s typically frowned upon in today’s society).

What We Fed to the Manticore by Talia Lakshmi KolluriCrown of Midnight by Sarah J. MaasRoll for Romance by Lenora WoodsA Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen

WHAT WE FED TO THE MANTICORE by Talia Lakshmi Kolluri: This is a compilation of short stories from various animals’ points of views about how they see the world. I think the best story was the first one.

CROWN OF MIDNIGHT by Sarah J. Maas: I finally finished book two of the Throne of Glass series! I don’t plan on reviewing them at all, so keep your eyes out for my WWW Wednesday updates on them. Anyway, I enjoyed this second installment as much as the first (a solid four stars). I shouldn’t have been as surprised as I was at a reveal, but what the heck, I’m just rolling with it. Next I think I’ll read the novellas before moving on to the third book. But I’ll need to double check that that’s the order SJM recommends.

ROLL FOR ROMANCE by Lenora Woods: I didn’t plan on picking up any ARCs, but I just really felt like reading this one. I knocked it out in three days, mainly thanks to one 12-hour travel day. I’m loving this trend of D&D romances. Review to come, but I enjoyed this. It wasn’t quite a 5-star read for me, but I still really liked it. “Two fledgling tabletop gamers find themselves falling for each other—both in and out of their weekly D&D sessions—in this charming, fantasy-tinged romance.

A FATE INKED IN BLOOD by Danielle Jensen: Chris and I decided to do a buddy read of this. I got sucked into this and enjoyed it a lot. It’s a solid 4 star read for me with respect to the romantasy genre. I can’t wait to read the next book, which I already preordered from B&N. (However, I haven’t decided whether to order the SE sequel from Fairyloot.) I might even write a review for this one! But it was neat to read a Vikings-inspired romantasy, which was a first for me.

They Knew by Sarah Kendzior

THEY KNEW by Sarah Kendzior: After a few fantasy mood reads, I think I’m ready for something else. I know I’m reading THE SWANS OF HARLEM, but I might pause that to start this. I’ve had it checked out of my library for weeks now. And when I get the urge to read something political, I know I have to seize it or lose it. I think the full title is pretty self-explanatory with respect to the book topic.

  1. What We Fed to the Manticore has a stunning cover! And Roll For Romance sounds cute, although the title is sort of cheesy, lol. Lots of variety here!

  2. I keep seeing A Fate Inked in Blood in the city library and I will pick it up one of these days. They Knew definitely sounds like a completely different read. I hope you enjoy all your reading this week.

  3. My Throne of Glass recommendation for reading order, is that the novellas pack more punch at the end of the series (when she wrote them), because you know everything about what happens to those characters and so the emotional weight of the novellas has more impact. Equally SJM may recommend something else 🙂

    1. Thanks for your recommendation! I was initially going to wait til the end, but I have others in my ear saying to read them now. What to do!! 🙃

    1. It was a fun read! I tried to request the YA one I think you read that was a queer romance? Unfortunately I think they stopped checking for requests and mine just sat there until they archived it. I was hoping to snag that one, too!

      1. So, I think the novella came out much later when I was reading the series. I read it completely out of order. I believe they recommend reading Assassin’s Blade after book 3!
