Currently Reading

Tideborn by Eliza ChanA Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy MassCuriouser And... by Jillian Maria

TIDEBORN by Eliza Chan: I received a finished copy from the publisher (thanks, Orbit!), so it’s finally time to dive back into this duology. This is the final book. I’ve read >40% of it so far and like it. I feel like the author’s writing style changed a little bit between this and the first book. There are a lot more sentence fragments that jar me out of the story. But I’d have to compare to the first book to be sure. Anyway, hopefully I find the conclusion satisfying! “A dragon queen, a vengeful sea witch, and a mythical titan converge on the underwater city of Tiankawi in the sequel to the international bestselling epic fantasy Fathomfolk.

A MANGO-SHAPED SPACE by Wendy Mass: This is my current Libby audiobook of choice. I found it just by browsing the “available now” options. It’s a juvenile fiction story about a13-year-old girl who sees color when she hears sound or tries to read or solve math problems. (For those who may not know, this is a form of synesthesia and actually exists.) I’m enjoying this book a lot. It apparently won the ALA Schneider Family Book Award.

CURIOUSER AND… by Jillian Maria: This is my latest novella read for the SFINCS finalist round. At the time I drafted this post I wasn’t very far into it, just 10%. But it appears to be a reimagining of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I like the writing style so far. It’s also refreshing to read a YA novella.

Recently Finished

Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil by Oliver DarkshireWhiteout by Dhonielle Clayton et al.

ISABELLA NAGG AND THE POT OF BASIL by Oliver Darkshire: I mentioned this ARC in last week’s WWW Wednesday. Ultimately it just wasn’t for me even though the synopsis called to me. Look for my review in early April!

WHITEOUT by Dhonielle Clayton: This was an enjoyable YA contemporary fiction about a friend group coming together to help one of their own win back her girlfriend. I initially found this by looking about the narrator of THE HATE U GIVE. While it didn’t grab me as much as THUG, I think it’d still resonate with a lot of other folks. For those interested, it has decent LGBTQ+ representation in the various POVs and is about Black joy.

Once Was Willem by M.R. Carey

With just a few days left in March I might try to squeeze in one more ARC before I start my April mood reading. I’m feeling pretty confident it’ll be ONCE WITH WILLEM. (I know, boring answer since this is the third week I mentioned it!) Hopefully I can finish it and write my review before I have to go on a work trip. If my SFINCS team needs help, then I’ll also throw in another novella. Of the eight novellas I could choose from to read, I’ve read five, so I hope I’ve done my part!

  1. My daughter has that type of synesthesia! Every music note has a different color and so she also has perfect pitch. When she was younger I remember her telling me that all toilet flushes are the note B flat, lol.

    1. That’s so interesting! I’ve only known a couple people with synesthesia, one of which I think also has that type and the other who sees letters having their own colors. There’s an influencer I’ve followed for years and she’s mentioned in the past she has a form where she can see time…she described it once & I couldn’t fathom it!
