I’m making slow and steady progress with my February TBR. My last priority read of the month is almost done. Then I can bounce to more mood reading!
WWW Wednesday was revived and hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. The idea is to answer the three questions below and leave a link to your post in the comments for others to look at. No blog? No problem! Just leave a comment with your responses.

STARLINGS by Mike Stark: I’m about 75% through with this ARC and wish I was done with it. I don’t want to DNF it because I genuinely want to learn about starlings. But you have to be a really avid birder to want to read all these quotes pulled from historical documents describing various things about starlings. It’s not a bad book, per se, but for the casual birder I want it to be more succinct. Review to come in early March.

LOVE YOU A LATKE by Amanda Elliot: This is a grumpy (female) x sunshine (male) contemporary romance. I love that it’s a romance with Jewish characters. Though the author didn’t have to do so, she incorporates into the dialogue how Hanukkah came to be, mentions different kinds of Jewish foods, and other various cultural things. I really liked that aspect of the book.
MORNING AFTER THE REVOLUTION by Nellie Bowles: “From former New York Times reporter Nellie Bowles, a look at how some of the most educated people in America lost their minds—and how she almost did, too.” I wasn’t sure what I would get into with this book. At 2/3 of the way through, I think I like this book. This book is a commentary on various movements/issues and why, when you dig deeper, there are some sides to the issue at hand that extreme liberals/anarchists either ignore, are unaware of, or just don’t care about. Some of the things are the BLM movement, defund the police, homeless encampments, and hormone suppression of minors for gender confirming care. The tone is somewhat sarcastic, which works for most chapters, but comes off as insensitive and dismissive for the the current LGBTQ+ chapter I’m listening to (for what it’s worth, the author is a lesbian). She brings up some valid points in each chapter, but the audiobook tone can ruffle feathers.

SWORD CATCHER by Cassandra Clare: It’s been a long time since I picked up a Clare book. So long that her Immortal Instruments series wasn’t finished, so I never read the last book because it wasn’t out! Anyway, I want to read this next so I can decide whether to purchase the sequel from Fairyloot next month. (I initially wanted to read A FATE INKED IN BLOOD next-ish, but I have a little more time to read that before Fairyloot offers a sequel.) “Two outcasts find themselves caught in a web of dangerous magic and dark secrets that could change the world forever in the start of a riveting epic fantasy series from the author of The Shadowhunter Chronicles.“
BELOW ZERO by Ali Hazelwood: This is the last STEM novella on my docket via Libby audiobook. It’s been nice to listen to something light, so I’ll be sad once I’m done with this mini series here. “A NASA aerospace engineer’s frozen heart melts as she lies injured and stranded at a remote Arctic research station and the only person willing to undertake the dangerous rescue mission is her longtime rival.”
I’m sorry to hear about the mixed feelings towards the non fiction books. I can see how a sarcastic tone is a controversial one to go for when dealing with those kind of topics and the background information with the other does sound pretty heavy. The romance sounds lovely though and it’s wonderful that it’s included bits about Hanukkah in it. I read Sword Catcher last year and enjoyed it. It did feel a bit info dumpy initially but it was great once it got going with some fantastic characters. I hope you enjoy it 🥰
This was only my second Hanukkah romance I read, but so far I’ve enjoyed both. I definitely recommend LOVE YOU A LATKE if you’re looking for a good seasonal romance.
Ooh what was the other? I’ll definitely add it to my TBR 😊 I really need to try and get into the romance genre.
Kissing Kosher by Jean Meltzer! I can’t remember if it takes place during Hanukkah, now that I think about it, but I remember it being winter during the book, so maybe?
I’ll have to check it out sometime too 😊 especially as I’m determined to try and read some seasonal reads next winter 😅
Do you want to buddy read Swordcatcher? I need to read it, too. Reading it together might give me the motivation I need to pick it up.
Oh for some reason I thought you’d read it already! Sure! I think the FL sale date for book 2 is March 20-something, so I’m hoping to finish it before then.
I’m willing to start it whenever you are ready. Just let me know. 🙂
I am sorry that Starlings didn’t work! I was curious to know why is an hated bird but I guess I can search it on the internet and skip the book.
And I am curious to know what you will think of Clare’s book. I am not her biggest fan, but I am curious towards this one!
It’s ok! I can’t 100% like everything I read! The start of SWIRD CATCHER was kind of slow & dense, but it’s getting better. This is my first Clare book in about a decade. I loved her HP fan fiction back in the early 2000s, which is how I discovered her.
Sword Catcher is one that I am so on the fence about!! I hope you love it so I can just cave and get it. haha.
Well, I have no firm thoughts on it yet! It started off slow. I’m 150 pages in now and it’s picking up a little bit. I’m not bored, but I’m also impatient lol.
I have seen mixed feelings about it. I can’t wait to see what you think after you finish!
