WWW Wednesday: July 10, 2024

I don’t really plan on making habitual WWW Wednesday posts again. But it is a good way to recap some books, especially when I don’t plan on writing lengthy reviews for some of them. That’s how I approached my last WWW Wednesday and how I plan to do today’s.

WWW Wednesday was revived and hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. The idea is to answer the three questions below and leave a link to your post in the comments for others to look at. No blog? No problem! Just leave a comment with your responses.

Currently Reading

Under the Henfluence by Tove DanovichThe Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

The two books I’m actively reading are UNDER THE HENFLUENCE and THE BOOK EATERS.

UNDER THE HENFLUENCE by Tove Danovich: I bought this book last year. It’s one of those I couldn’t stop thinking about when I saw it, so I made it mine. Fast forward to now and I’m reading it as a palate cleanser between fantasy reads. So far I really love it. I’m about 50% through. The author talks about her desire to have pet chickens after moving away from NYC to Portland, Oregon. Of course there is also a good amount of history and interviewing chick hatcheries. It’s organized quite well, which I appreciate. All in all, even though I have yet to finish it, I feel confident recommending this one already.

THE BOOK EATERS by Sunyi Dean: I have a special edition of it, but opted for the audiobook route since it was “available now” and a standalone. The narrator is fantastic. I love her accent. At the time I drafted this post I’d read 30% of it. I’m not quite sure yet where it’s going, but it’s interesting. I particularly love the concept of beings that eat books for sustenance. The vibes remind me a bit of BOOK OF NIGHT by Holly Black.

Recently Finished

Gay the Pray Away by Natalie NaudusThe Nightingale's Castle by Sonia VeltonHow to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler

Since my last WWW Wednesday post I’ve finished GAY THE PRAY AWAY, THE NIGHTINGALE’S CASTLE, and HOW TO BECOME THE DARK LORD AND DIE TRYING.

GAY THE PRAY AWAY by Natalie Naudus: This was fantastic and I highly recommend reading it. I listened to the audiobook and really loved Natalie’s narration. It’s an upper YA book, but I think it’s appropriate for all high schoolers. Frankly, even a middle grader might understand some of the concepts. “Valerie Danners is in a cult. She just doesn’t know it yet. When she finds a queer book at the library and smuggles it home, her conservative Christian homeschooling world begins to crack.”

THE NIGHTINGALE’S CASTLE by Sonia Velton: This is an ARC. I won’t say too much about it here since my review goes live tomorrow. Suffice it to say I thought its strength was the historical fiction aspect. The magical realism is something I could take or leave. “In the vein of riveting historical novels such as Hamnet and Circe–with a touch of Dracula–a propulsive, feminist reimagining of the story of Erzsébet Báthory, the infamous sixteenth-century Hungarian aristocrat known as the “Blood Countess”, who was rumored to have murdered hundreds of peasant girls and bathed in their blood.

HOW TO BECOME THE DARK LORD AND DIE TRYING by Django Wexler: This is also a book I received for free from the publisher. I have to write my official review for it, but overall I enjoyed the humor. The plot is a bit simplistic, but I liked it enough to want to read the final book in the duology.

Poison In Their Hearts by Laura Sebastian

Next I definitely plan to read POISON IN THEIR HEARTS by Laura Sebastian. This is a library book that I thought I wouldn’t be able to renew. Thankfully so far it looks like I’ll be able to renew it, which is good because I only have a few days left on the loan!

    1. Thanks! So far so good! I probably would’ve liked to sit down and read this one, but I have to get through my backlog somehow, so audiobook it is!

  1. I have a pretty edition of The Book Eaters, too, and that’s part of why I haven’t read it yet ???????? I don’t want to mess up my book! But I’m eager to give it a go and I hope you continue to enjoy.

    1. For me I just have too many books, lol!!! The main reason I selected the audiobook version (aside from the fact it’s nice to have something to listen to while doing mundane chores) is it’s a standalone and not very long. So far it’s quite good!
