If I had the motivation, I would have requested a lot of ARCs in July. But I decided I needed a break to focus on the physical books I bought for myself. Regardless, there are quite a few anticipated 2024 third quarter book releases that I’m looking forward to. Again, I don’t know if I’ll ever get to all of them. But I can still dream.
There are quite a few that I strongly suspect I’ll receive in my book subscriptions. However, I won’t mark those as preorders to avoid spoiling the surprise for anyone. This also played into why I didn’t request ARCs from one of my favorite publishers. Now, let’s take a look at those anticipated 2024 third quarter book releases. (For reference, you can also view my anticipated 2024 book releases for this first and second quarters, too.)

Synopsis
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Magicians trilogy returns with a triumphant reimagining of the King Arthur legend for the new millennium
A gifted young knight named Collum arrives at Camelot to compete for a spot on the Round Table, only to find that he’s too late. The king died two weeks ago at the Battle of Camlann, leaving no heir, and only a handful of the knights of the Round Table survive.
They aren’t the heroes of legend, like Lancelot or Gawain. They’re the oddballs of the Round Table, from the edges of the stories, like Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur’s fool, who was knighted as a joke. They’re joined by Nimue, who was Merlin’s apprentice until she turned on him and buried him under a hill. Together this ragtag fellowship will set out to rebuild Camelot in a world that has lost its balance.
But Arthur’s death has revealed Britain’s fault lines. God has abandoned it, and the fairies and monsters and old gods are returning, led by Arthur’s half-sister Morgan le Fay. Kingdoms are turning on each other, warlords lay siege to Camelot and rival factions are forming around the disgraced Lancelot and the fallen Queen Guinevere. It is up to Collum and his companions to reclaim Excalibur, solve the mysteries of this ruined world and make it whole again. But before they can restore Camelot they’ll have to learn the truth of why the lonely, brilliant King Arthur fell, and lay to rest the ghosts of his troubled family and of Britain’s dark past.
The first major Arthurian epic of the new millennium, The Bright Sword is steeped in tradition, full of duels and quests, battles and tournaments, magic swords and Fisher Kings. It also sheds a fresh light on Arthur’s Britain, a diverse, complex nation struggling to come to terms with its bloody history. The Bright Sword is a story about imperfect men and women, full of strength and pain, who are looking for a way to reforge a broken land in spite of being broken themselves.

Synopsis
A fascinating investigation into the lucrative, minimally regulated, fast-growing industry of egg freezing, from a young reporter on a personal journey into the world of cutting-edge reproductive medicine
“An engaging and groundbreaking book.”–Toni Weschler, MPH, author of Taking Charge of Your Fertility
Ovaries. Most women have two; journalist Natalie Lampert has only one. Then, in her early twenties, she almost lost it, along with her ability to ever have biological children. Doctors urged her to freeze her eggs, and Lampert started asking questions.
The Big Freeze is the story of Lampert’s personal quest to investigate egg freezing, as well as the multibillion-dollar femtech industry, in order to decide the best way to preserve her own fertility. She attended flashy egg-freezing parties, visited high-priced fertility clinics, talked to dozens of women who froze their eggs, toured the facility in Italy where the technology was developed, and even attended a memorial service for thousands of accidentally destroyed embryos.
What was once science fiction is now simply science: Fertility can be frozen in time. Between 2009 and 2022, more than 100,000 women in the United States opted to freeze their eggs. Along with in vitro fertilization, egg freezing is touted as a way for women to “have it all” by conquering their biological clocks, in line with the global trend of delaying childbirth. A generation after the Pill, this revolutionary technology offers a new kind of freedom for women. But does egg freezing give women real agency or just the illusion of it?
A personal and deeply researched guide to the pros, cons, and many facets of this wildly popular technology, The Big Freeze is a page-turning exploration of the quest to control fertility, with invaluable information that answers the questions women have been afraid to ask–or didn’t know they should ask in the first place.

Synopsis
A palace the size of a city, ruled by giant Ladies of unknowable, eldritch origin. A land left to slow decay, drowning in the debris of generations. All this and more awaits you within The West Passage, a delightfully mysterious and intriguingly weird medieval fantasy unlike anything you’ve read before.
When the Guardian of the West Passage died in her bed, the women of Grey Tower fed her to the crows and went back to their chores. No successor was named as Guardian, no one took up the fallen blade; the West Passage went unguarded.
Now, snow blankets Grey in the height of summer. Rats erupt from beneath the earth, fleeing that which comes. Crops fail. Hunger looms. And none stand ready to face the Beast, stirring beneath the poisoned soil.
The fate of all who live in the palace hangs on narrow shoulders. The too-young Mother of Grey House sets out to fix the seasons. The unnamed apprentice of the deceased Grey Guardian goes to warn Black Tower. Both their paths cross the West Passage, the ancient byway of the Beast. On their journeys they will meet schoolteachers and beekeepers, miracles and monsters, and very, very big Ladies. None can say if they’ll reach their destinations, but one thing is for sure: the world is about to change.

Synopsis
Sensitive, soft-spoken Laurel Aleandri wakes at age eight to discover the world around her has changed—deepened. The rug under her feet feels softer, her father’s freshly-baked bread steams with joy, and his hymns carry a life of their own. A descendent of the Damica—women both praised and feared for their gifts—Laurel’s power is unlike her mother’s. Instead of reading fortunes, she feels into hearts and minds with a light brush of her fingertips.
As is the tradition of the Damica, she is whisked away to the Accademia Marl, only to be swallowed by a darker side of her gift. Litha, her headmistress calls it—a madness that sweeps through the Damica with her empathic ability. Shuttered away, devoid of warmth and light, Laurel finds herself enraptured by flowers and drawn to the moon. . . gentle, beautiful things that keep the darkness within from stirring.
But thrust into a world of politics and deceit, Laurel’s headmistress warns that deep empathy is more dangerous and valuable than she knows. She is sold to a general as a bride—and a weapon that could reverse the tides of her kingdom’s war, which sits on a knife’s edge of defeat.
Pressed like a flower between the pages of fate and chance, Laurel flees, placing her faith in a shattered swordsman with a quick blade and a biting cynicism, while the general she runs from pursues her relentlessly. Haunted by shadow demons, violent visions, and omens of death, Laurel must chance her dark depths to determine not only her own fate, but that of every person she encounters.
Fate and chance. Balance and adjustment. Empathy and madness. Is it better to live in chains—or to embrace the shadows?

Set in a magical zoo teeming with mythical beasts from dragons and unicorns to kelpies and krakens, The Phoenix Keeper is a fierce joy of a cozy fantasy novel with a soul-restoring queer romance at its heart, for fans of The House in the Cerulean Sea and Legends and Lattes.
As head phoenix keeper at a world-renowned zoo for magical creatures, Aila’s childhood dream of conserving critically endangered firebirds seems closer than ever. There’s just one glaring caveat: her zoo’s breeding program hasn’t functioned for a decade. When a tragic phoenix heist sabotages the flagship initiative at a neighboring zoo, Aila must prove her derelict facilities are fit to take the reins.
But saving an entire species from extinction requires more than stellar animal handling skills. Carnivorous water horses, tempestuous thunderhawks, mischievous dragons… Aila has no problem wrangling beasts. But mustering the courage to ask for help from the hotshot griffin keeper at the zoo’s most popular exhibit? Virtually impossible.
Especially when that hotshot griffin keeper happens to be her arch-rival from college: Luciana, an annoyingly brooding and insufferable know-it-all with the face of a goddess who’s convinced that Aila’s beloved phoenix would serve their cause better as an active performer rather than as a passive conservation exhibit. With the world watching and the threat of poachers looming, Aila’s success is no longer merely a matter of keeping her job…She is the keeper of the phoenix, and the future of a species- and her love life- now rests on her shoulders.

Ten years ago, they saved the realm. It ruined their lives.
Everyone in Mythria knows the story of how best friends Beatrice and Elowen, handsome ex-bandit Clare, and valiant leader Galwell the Great defended the land from darkness. It’s a tale beloved by all–except the former heroes. They haven’t spoken in a decade, devastated by what their quest cost them.
But when they receive an invitation to the queen of Mythria’s wedding, it’s a summons they can’t refuse . . . and a reunion for the ages, with Clare secretly not over his long-ago fling with Beatrice, Beatrice fighting the guilt she feels over how everything ended, Elowen unprepared for the return of her former flame (the cunning Vandra), and all of them lost without Galwell’s presence. And if reuniting with old friends and lovers wasn’t perilous enough, dark forces from their past have returned, plotting a domination that only Mythria’s one-time defenders can stop. Maybe.
Dusting off old weapons and old instincts, they face undead nemeses, crystal caves, enchanted swords, coffee shops, games of magical Truth or Dare, and, hardest of all, their past–rife with wounds never healed and romances never forgotten.

Dragons are extinct. Witches are outcast. Magic is dying.
But human lust for power is immortal.
Dragon fire no longer blisters the skies over Penterra, but inside the lavish palace, life is still perilous…especially for Tamsyn. Raised in the glittering court alongside the princesses, it’s her duty to be punished for their misdeeds. Treated as part of the royal family but also as the lowliest servant, Tamsyn fits nowhere. Her only friend is Stig, Captain of the Guard…though sometimes she thinks he wants more than friendship.
When Fell, the Beast of the Borderlands, descends on her home, Tamsyn’s world becomes even more dangerous. To save the pampered princesses from a fate worse than death, she is commanded to don a veil and marry the brutal warrior. She agrees to the deception even though it means leaving Stig, and the only life she’s ever known, behind.
The wedding night begins with unexpected passion–and ends in near violence when her trickery is exposed. Rather than start a war, Fell accepts Tamsyn as his bride…but can he accept the dark secrets she harbors–secrets buried so deep even she doesn’t know they exist? For Tamsyn is more than a royal whipping girl, more than the false wife of a man who now sees her as his enemy. And when those secrets emerge, they will ignite a flame bright enough to burn the entire kingdom to the bone.
Magic is not dead…it is only sleeping. And it will take one ordinary girl with an extraordinary destiny to awaken it.
I’m sure I’ll stumble upon more interesting 2024 third quarter book releases. But for the mean time, these are the books that interest me the most. Are any of these on your anticipated book release list?
Out of all of these, I’m most looking forward to Lucy Undying, and The Ghost Cat is also calling to me! Overall this looks like a fun bunch to read.
I’m considering requesting Lucy Undying on NG, but going to give myself another month to see how I feel “work load”-wise.
This Fatal Kiss sounds ???? (and I love the cover).
I absolutely love the cover of THE FATAL KISS. It’s what first drew my attention, but the synopsis sounds just as amazing.
Most of these I have never heard of but there are some fantasy books on this list that sound like ones that I need to add to my TBR.
Always happy to help add to your TBR! 😉
You are extremely bad for the height of my TBR????????
Why are they question marks? I typed smiling faces ☹️
I don’t know! This emoji glitch has been going on for months, but I don’t know why! I use Jetpack for comments, but for some reason it gets angry at anything other than super common emojis.
I use Jetpack too but don’t think that’s happened before. It’s certainly irritating as you can’t edit them
Agreed. I tried to look into it last night but it got complicated…something to do with the coding and whatnot. I was like yeaaaa I’m not confident enough to mess with that.
So many books here I’m excited for (Mistress of Lies and Mistress of Evil in particular are ones I’m DYING to read), and a few that are new-to-me but I now need to add to my TBR (Beautiful Serpent, Restless Embers has a stunning cover), so thank you for this list! <3 I have an eARC of This Fatal Kiss and it sounds slightly intimidating, but I can't wait to read it. 🙂
Happy to help add to your TBR! I wouldn’t have found Beautiful Serpent, Restless Embers if I hadn’t been scrolling through NG. I hope you like This Fatal Kiss…I’ll keep an eye out for your review. Honestly, the only thing holding me back from requesting it on NG is that it’s YA and that age group of books tends to be hit or miss for me. Those end up being library borrows for me.
I hope This Will Be Fun is fun! I grabbed a NetGalley of Lucy Undying even though I feel like I’m reading too much historical fantasy. I enjoyed her contemp horrors though, so I’ll give it a try.
Somehow I have commented with some random wordpress account I didn’t know I had! Anyway, it’s me 😀
I was wondering why there were a bunch of alphanumerics after your name! I recognized your picture, though! I also how THIS WILL BE FUN lives up to its title…it looks like a good time.
How on earth have I not heard of The Bright Sword before? It sounds incredible and is going straight onto my TBR. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention. Same with Ruthless Embers. West Passage is already on my TBR as is Nightingales Castle which I recently got the ebook of so hopefully I’ll get a chance to read it soon. And I’m really hoping to read my copy of Morgana so that I can check out the sequel soon too.
Lady Macbeth is one of my three most anticipated reads for the rest of the year. Im really excited for Enchanted Lies too & am keeping an eye out for arcs of it where I am.
Wow someone I hadn’t heard of The Scarlet Throne either and a series title like False Goddess would definitely have caught my eye. This Fatal Kiss is new to me too. Although Lucy Undying & A Fire In The Sky are both already high priority on my TBR.
I relate to the arc thing too. There are a few I’m so tempted to request but I need to get my physical TBR down and I’ve just requested a stack of library books. So I’m waiting a couple of weeks to request anything else, unless something super high priority catches my eye. I really wanted to go for Moonlight Market but it’s out in a few days so I’ll wait and borrow it from the library or treat myself to a copy instead.
I hope you enjoy all of these books and discover some new favourites.
I honestly haven’t seen much about THE BRIGHT SWORD on bookstagram or book Twitter. The only reason I found out about it is because I was looking through NetGalley a few months ago. I requested it, but got rejected for it. I just checked the listing again on NG and they only have 53 reviews there with 2 weeks left til the pub date…so I wonder if they were just picky with who they approved? So it hasn’t received a lot of pre-pub promotion? No idea!
Aww I’m really sorry that you didn’t get accepted for it. I suppose they must have been. Have you read anything by the author before? If not maybe they were mostly accepting those that have or something. Thanks again for sharing it though as it sounds incredible.
