WWW Wednesday: October 16, 2024

My reading so far this month is very slow. I finally finished a few books that I started a while ago. I doubt I’ll hit the 12+ books I read last month. But that’s ok! I’m just happy that I can keep reading.

WWW Wednesday was revived and hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. The idea is to answer the three questions below and leave a link to your post in the comments for others to look at. No blog? No problem! Just leave a comment with your responses.

The Inside Story of the British Bureau for the Arcane by Phil Parker

THE AMBER SPYGLASS by Philip Pullman: As I mentioned in the To Be Read Book Tag, I’ve had this on my TBR for a long time, probably about 25 years. (Omg, I can’t believe I’m old enough now to say that!!) It’s the third and final book in the original His Dark Materials series. For some reason I couldn’t just sit down and read the last two books. So the full cast audiobooks are immensely helpful to get me to that finish line. I’m 70% through at this point, so I think I’ll make it!

THE INSIDE STORY OF THE BRITISH BUREAU FOR THE ARCANE by Phil Parker: I included this in my October TBR. Now that I finished a couple of backlist ARCs I figured it’s time to start this! I’m not too far into it, so I don’t have much to say yet. “For Arlo Austin, a loyal but troubled agent for the Bureau, something is wrong. When he’s sent to protect the citizens of the Shetland Isles from rampaging Norwegian trolls, it soon becomes apparent it was an attempt on his life.”

Recently Finished

I finally finished these two ARCs! I’m so happy about that.

The City of Stardust by Georgia SummersInvisible Labor by Rachel Somerstein

THE CITY OF STARDUST by Georgia Summers: I thought this was great! I won’t go into too much detail here since I wrote up my review to post later. But I loved the fairytale vibes of this. I wanted a little more detail for some things, but overall I definitely recommend it.

INVISIBLE LABOR by Rachel Somerstein: Whew, this took me well over a month to read. As I mentioned before, it has a lot of information for 334 pages, the last 15% of which is sources, acknowledgments, etc. It’s also, I feel, an important subject, so I didn’t just want to speed through it. I have to write my review for it, so expect it in the next 2-3 weeks or so.

The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon

I thought I’d read THE BLACK HUNGER by Nicholas Pullen next. However, Fairyloot announced their upcoming special edition for A MONSOON RISING by Thea Guanzon. To decide whether I want to purchase it, I first need to read THE HURRICANE WARS. This is the push I need to read one of my special editions, not to mention something I bought on my own. I hope it lives up to the hype because the FL edition of THW is beautiful.

  1. You will definetely make it with The Amber Spyglass!! They books changed a lot from the original story; I am curious about going back into it, especially with the audio, but I am also a bit scared.
It would be cool if you had the special edition for both The Hurricane War and A Monsoon Rising, so I hope you enjoy it!

  2. I don’t know why I never continued with the other books in the His Dark Materials series. While I enjoyed book one I don’t think I fell as deeply in love with it as most others seem to be with it. Still curious to continue the series though! You’re so close to the finish—I hope you enjoy it! Happy reading 🙂

    1. I wouldn’t say I loved the HDM trilogy, haha, but I certainly found it entertaining. I think if I liked it more I’d probably be able to sit and read it, but this had to be an audiobook listen for me. Just couldn’t sit down long enough to read it. Aaaand I just finished it today, so yay!

    1. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with how much I have/want to read in the next couple of weeks, haha. I’ll try to get to THE BLACK HUNGER after I read THE HURRICANE WARS.

  3. Ooh I’m going to have to check out the Fairyloot edition that you mentioned. I’m hoping to check out Hurricane Wars soon too as I’d love to be up to date before the sequel releases. I hope you enjoy it. I’m glad you enjoyed City Of Stardust and I’ll keep an eye out for your review.

    1. If all goes according to plan, I’ll be freshly briefed to read the sequel to THE HURRICANE WARS haha! I think I preordered the sequel through B&N. My review for THE CITY OF STARDUST will be up tomorrow! 🙂
