THE WOMEN OF TROY by Pat Barker: A family member gifted me a physical copy of this, but I checked it out of the library as an audiobook. I’m about 20% into it. This is the second book in Barker’s Women of Troy series, and this one occurs after the fall of Troy. If you’ve read SILENCE OF THE GIRLS, THE WOMEN OF TROY also follows Briseis. “A daring and timely feminist retelling of The Iliad from the perspective of the women of Troy who endured it—an extraordinary follow up to The Silence of the Girls from the Booker Prize-winning author of The Regeneration Trilogy and “one of contemporary literature’s most thoughtful and compelling writers” (The Washington Post).“
MONARCHS OF THE SEA by Danna Staaf: This is one of my current eyeball reads. I found this book earlier this year while browsing the nature section at B&N. I’m 60 pages into about 200 pages of actual reading (not including the references) and enjoying it so far. Staaf does a pretty good job keeping the text casual as she explains the evolution of cephalopods (squid, etc.). But I still find I can only read 20 pages or so at a time because it’s a lot of information unknown to me.
KILLING GRAVITY by Corey J. White: I also have a scifi novella going, which I rotate to when I need a break from reading about cephalopods. This book was part of a prize I won during a round of SciFi Month that’s hosted around the blogosphere. So I’m glad to finally be getting around to one of the books! KILLING GRAVITY kind of drops you right into the action so I’m not sure where this is going yet! I’m a little confused! “Mars Xi can kill you with her mind, but she’ll need more than psychic powers to save her in Killing Gravity, the thrilling science fiction space adventure debut by Corey J. White.“

HOUSE OF ROOTS AND RUIN by Erin A. Craig: I finally finished this audiobook. I thought it was pretty good, but the pace was slower than I prefer. This is a gothic novel, so it’s not really a surprise that I didn’t like it as much as other things I read. It’s definitely a me thing and not on the author. “A modern masterpiece, this is a classic Gothic thriller-fantasy from bestselling author Erin A. Craig, about doomed love, menacing ambition, and the ghosts that haunt us forever.“
FALLEN CITY by Adrienne Young: I picked this up on a whim last night instead of following my September TBR. I wasn’t sure how much I’d like it since I have mixed experiences with what I’ve read of Young’s, plus ancient Rome-inspired fantasy isn’t something I generally gravitate to. In the end I actually enjoyed it. I’m not sure I’d call it a new favorite, but I’d definitely recommend it. My review will be up on Monday. “In the great walled city of Isara, political turmoil ignites a rebellion one hundred years in the making. But when a legionnaire falls in love with a Magistrate’s daughter, their love will threaten the fate of the city and the will of the gods.“

I really have no idea what I’ll read next. Clearly I didn’t pick up anything I mentioned in last week’s WWW Wednesday. In October I plan to read KINGDOM OF ASH. There’s a chance I could fit one more book in between now and the beginning of October. If that’s the case, I might go to my pile of ARCs. I’ve been thinking about TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, so maybe that’ll be the one.
