EMPIRE OF STORMS by Sarah J. Maas: I’m in the thick of this book and loving it! By the time this post goes live, hopefully I’ll be in the last stretch of the book. The fight scenes have held my attention rapt. No spoilers from me, in case anyone here hasn’t read it yet. (Also, please no spoilers in the comments. This is my first read through of the series.)

A MARVELLOUS LIGHT by Freya Marske: I’m still technically reading this, but switched over to audiobook format so I can focus on finishing EMPIRE OF STORMS. (I need to stay on target to finish that series before October 27.) I’m about 40% into the story so far and am enjoying it. The magic system is interesting and I’m starting to get worried they won’t find a cure for the curse.

Just Finished

ROSARITA by Anita Desai: I borrowed this from Libby as an audiobook after the gorgeous cover caught my eye at Barnes & Noble. I’m sorry to say that I didn’t feel like the story was as intriguing as the book cover. The main character decided to leave India to study abroad in Mexico to learn Spanish. There, an old woman says she knew the FMC’s mother. Intrigued, the FMC tries to decide whether this old woman is telling the truth or not. I think there’s some commentary in here about colonialism and expectations of women at the time. But I felt like it got lost in the lack of movement of the story. I didn’t really know what the take home message was supposed to be. “…an exquisitely written stunning exploration of love, place, memory, history, and the secrets between a mother and her daughter.“

BUFFALOR DREAMER by Violet Duncan: This is a middle grade novel that I also listened to via audiobook. It’s about a girl who spends summers in Canada with her family. Once there they learn that there are burials of indigenous people on the grounds of one of the residential schools where indigenous children were forced to live away from their families. I thought this was a good way to broach the topic with young, curious minds. Some of the dialogue was kind of stilted, but that’s ok. “An illuminating novel about the importance of reclaiming the past, based on the author’s family history.”

Reading Next

I have a lot of reading time in my future and the next book I plan to pick up is THE WITCH BELOW THE DREAMING WOOD by H.G. Parry. (Thanks to the publisher for the ARC!) Chris and I plan to buddy read it. I’m excited to jump into another Arthurian fantasy.

I haven’t 100% decided which book I’ll read after Parry’s latest. But at the moment I’m leaning toward THE FEYWILD JOB by C.L. Polk. I included this book both in my June 2026 TBR and carried it over into my July 2026 TBR. Hopefully I’ll actually get to it this month. However, I really do need to read DAUGHTER OF THE OTHERWORLD by Shauna Lawless. It’s one of my more overdue ARCs and book two comes out later this year. I’ll play it by ear…what I pick up depends on my focus, of which I think Lawless’s book will require more.
