Sundays In Bed With…Happy Place

The Sundays in Bed With… meme, hosted by Midnight Book Girl, dares to ask what book has been in your bed this morning. Come share what book you’ve spent time curled up reading in bed, or which book you wish you had time to read today!

Look at me, I’m already deviating from my June TBR that I said I really wanted to stick to! After finishing A COURT OF SILVER FLAMES, my next book was supposed to be HILD by Nicola Griffith. And, technically I started it. I think I read 5 pages. But it’s also a chonk and I needed a genre switch to something I find less brain intensive: the world of contemporary romances. I was also in pain yesterday and some today, so something on the side of a “comfort read” sounded lovely. So here I am reading HAPPY PLACE! It’s my first Emily Henry book. I started it last night and am about 60 pages in and enjoying it so far. Looking forward to reading more of it this morning.

A couple who broke up months ago pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college–they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now–for reasons they’re still not discussing–they don’t.

They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week…in front of those who know you best?

  1. I’ve been trying to be much better about not “forcing” myself to read certain books when I’m not in the right headspace, just because it’s on my TBR. Shockingly, you read faster when you enjoy what you’re reading! Who’d have thunk?

    1. You’re absolutely right. I finished HAPPY PLACE in just over a day. It had been a long time since I read something that fast. I think the genre has a lot to do with it as I find contemporary romances easier to read (I don’t have to learn new spells or cities, etc.). But if you’re really enjoying something, as you said, it definitely enhances the ability to read something quickly! I devoured it, as you could say.
