This Week’s Question
Is there a hard-to-find first-edition that you would love to own? If so, why? (Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)
My literal answer to this answer is “No.” However, expanding the scope a bit, I would love to have first editions of the A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES original hardbacks. However, I found the original hardback covers on eBay over time for prices I was willing to pay. They’re not first editions, but I’m ok with that. Now, what I’d really love is the dust jackets designed by Elithien Art for the series. I believe Illumicrate subscribers were the lucky ones to get their hands on these some time ago. They are absolutely stunning but incredibly expensive to purchase secondhand. I often see them listed for $700+ on resale sites. I don’t really yearn for a lot of special edition books or bookish items, but these dust jackets are some of the few items I’d really love to have.
$700 for a resale book?! Ouch. I’m curious if this is just wishful thinking or if there’s a long history of it actually selling at that price.
I can’t think of anything recent that I’d really want. If Shakespeare’s First Folio counts as a hard-to-find first edition, that’d be pretty cool to have. I’d loan it out long-term to a local museum as they’d be able to better take care of the book than me.
Well, it’s for a set of 4 dust jackets for the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. There was a limited number of them, both through the artist and Illumicrate. And the ACOTAR series is very popular, so I’ve consistently seen them listed around $700 on Mercari, or $500 if you’re “lucky.” I haven’t checked eBay in a long time for them, so I’m not sure if the prices are similar there. And they do end up selling for a pretty penny.
The amount of money some people will pay for special editions is wild. One of my favorite things to do is browse eBay and see how much books can cost if demand is high enough! I don’t have any that I’ve been looking for that I can think of. Sometimes I will see one and have fomo, but not usually.
I know!!! I can’t believe the amount of money some people are willing to spend on special editions of books or book-related merchandise (e.g., pins, dust jackets). I mean, if that’s someone’s main hobby, I get it. But I get a bit anxious thinking about dropping $700 on a dust jacket set. Eeek! I just can’t do it. But I’m with you…most of the time I don’t have FOMO. And, sometimes, I like the regular edition cover better haha!
