I’ve been in a weird reading mood all month. I can’t seem to settle down to read. Perhaps one reason is most of the books I’ve picked up so far are kind of average, so I’m not super motivated to read them. The other reason is it’s gardening season and I was in Florida for a few days visiting friends and going to theme parks. I’m trying to stay out of a reading slump. It’s by pure determination that I even have a WWW Wednesday update!

THE SECRET LIFE OF ALBERT ENTWISTLE by Matt Cain: I’ve had my eye on this for years now so when I was scrolling through Libby for an LGBTQ+ audiobook for Pride Month, I saw this was available. I like it so far, though I didn’t appreciate the pet death in the first third of the book. “Perfect for fans of Fredrik Backman and TJ Klune, this humorous, life-affirming, and charmingly wise novel tells the story of how the forced retirement of a shy, closeted postman in northern England creates a second chance with his lost love, as he learns to embrace his true self, connect with his community, and finally experience his life’s great adventure…“

THE ANTHROPOCENE REVIEWED by John Green: I don’t usually have two audiobooks going at once. But I foolishly thought I’d finish the Albert Entwistle book with enough time to read this one. So, uh, my focus is on this one because it has a long holds list. This is the second book by Green I’m reading and it’s interesting, I guess. He reviews various culturally significant items (which is subjective) and his experience with them. I thought it would be more of a science book, but that’s because I didn’t read the synopsis beforehand. “In this remarkable symphony of essays, bestselling author John Green reviews different facets of the human-centered planet on a five-star scale…”

A MARVELLOUS LIGHT by Freya Marske: I’m not too far into this, so no strong opinions yet. The only thing I have to say is it seems all the books I’m reading this month have very distinct writing styles. So to switch to yet another different style (Edwardian era England) is a bit jarring. But I’m sure I’ll get into the swing of it. “Red, White & Royal Blue meets Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell in debut author Freya Marske’s A Marvellous Light, featuring an Edwardian England full of magic, contracts, and conspiracies.“

Just Finished

A LETTER TO MY TRANSGENDER DAUGHTER by Carolyn Hays: I have mixed feelings about this book. One the one hand, I appreciated that it’s from the perspective of the mother of a trans child. A lot of literature focuses on the trans experience, which is totally valid, but I don’t know that there’s a lot of literature out there from the perspective of folks who support the trans person through their journey. The latter perspective is also as valid. However, it’s not as approachable a read as I hoped. The author’s academic background comes through in the writing, so it was a bit dense at times. And it bounces around timeline-wise, so I lost focus at times. But it was nice to finish a book from my Pride Month TBR.

THE EVOLUTION OF A GIRL by L.E. Bowman: This is a poetry book by a poet I’ve been following on Instagram for a while. I’m not usually into poetry, but I like her style. When I saw her say she let this one go out of print, I broke my Amazon ban because it was the only place I could find a copy. (And that was a whole annoyance…what’s the point in using a free trial of Prime only for the book to arrive 11 days after placing the order? I almost thought I got scammed. But I digress.) Anyway, this is Bowman’s first poetry book, which explores self worth in relationships and becoming feminist.

While I still have books from my Pride Month TBR to get to, I also wanted to tackle another TOG book. So I think my next book will be EMPIRE OF STORMS. (Please no spoilers…this is my first read through of the series.)
