Naughty Or Nice Book Tag

I thought I did this Naughty or Nice Book Tag last year, but apparently I didn’t. Thanks to Chris for bringing it to my attention. The Naughty or Nice Book Tag was created by Jen of Jenniely, and the goal is to answer the bookish questions to find out if you will be on Santa’s naughty or nice list this year. I didn’t tag anyone, but feel free to join in the Naughty or Nice Book Tag.

My Answers

1. Received an ARC and not reviewed it

Naughty. I have three books from 2022 that I have yet to read and review. Technically, I have four 2023 ARCs that I’m behind on; one is from March and the others are more recent. I am reading one of them, though!

2. Have less than 60% feedback rating on Netgalley

Nice. My feedback ratio is sitting happily at 84%.

3. Rated a book on Goodreads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did)

Nice. I don’t leave reviews on Goodreads for a variety of reasons. Therefore, I have never committed this “crime.”

4. Folded down the page of a book

Nice. I used to in the past, but not anymore and not this year! I would never do that now because I really treasure my books. Even if I decide not to keep one, it’s also easier to try and sell it if it doesn’t have dog-eared pages.

5. Accidentally spilled on a book

Nice. I haven’t spilled anything on a book this year.

6. DNF a book this year

Naughty. I DNF several books this year. I think it was around five, though, which is pretty good considering I read about 100 books in 2023.

7. Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it

Nice. I do buy books because they’re pretty, but when I do that it’s because I do want to eventually read them. I suppose the closest I get to being naughty about this one is I have several special editions of the Crescent City series. However, I read the standard edition because I had it first. (And I also bought those SE in 2022.)

8. Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else (like homework)

Naughty. Of course I read when I was supposed to be doing something else. There’s always some boring task adults have to do that we don’t want to do.

9. Skim read a book

Naughty. I know I skim read one or two books this year, but I can’t remember which ones. Clearly they made an impression on me.

10. Completely missed your Goodreads goal

Nice. I actually read about double my initial GR goal. I set a goal of 52 and I’ve read close to 100 books at this point.

11. Borrowed a book and not returned it to the library

Nice. Even though my library system got rid of fines, I still can’t bring myself to never return books, even late. They’re a public resource and I want to make sure the next person gets to read them.

12. Broke a book buying ban

Naughty. Ok, technically this is a “yes.” I put myself on a soft book-buying ban at one point this year, but allowed myself a couple of exceptions. Then I gave up after 1.5 months or so.

13. Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about

Nice. I did this last year, but not this year! I’m all caught up on reviews for 2023.

14. Wrote in a book you were reading

Nice. I don’t do this anymore, not for a while, in fact. It makes me cringe. I think the only time I’d do this is if I bought a used copy of a book with the intention to annotate it.

15. Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads

Naughty. I definitely read some books that I didn’t add to my Goodreads, but I think I put on my StoryGraph. The reason for that is several people I know in person follow me on GR and I didn’t want them to speculate about certain books. Those particular reads were personal to me.

16. Borrowed a book and not returned it to a friend

Nice. I will always strive to return a borrowed book. I returned a whole bunch of them this year because I just hadn’t gotten around to reading them.

17. Dodged someone asking if they can borrow a book

Nice. Thankfully this hasn’t come up. But if a friend wanted to borrow one of my special editions I would probably have to say no to that.

18. Broke the spine of someone else’s book

Nice. Again, I try not to, but I also haven’t borrowed much from others this year, just the library.

19. Took the jacket off a book to protect it and ended up making it more damaged

Nice. I don’t think I felt like I needed to take a book jacket off this year. I might have done so for FOURTH WING, but I can’t remember.

20. Sat on a book accidentally

Nice. I’m pretty sure I haven’t sat on a book accidentally.

Total: 6/20

  1. Cute idea for a tag!! My ‘naughty’ points for this year would be DNF’ing and completely missing my Goodreads goal. Well, and probably reading when I was supposed to be doing something else 😀 I think I skim read a couple things last year, but nothing this year. #19 is so pointed haha – I have done that in the past but learnt my lesson!
