Witch King by Martha Wells
I started reading this about a week ago and I’m still working on it. Currently I’m past the 50% mark, but it is a slower read for me because there are a lot of names and places to try to remember. The whole concept of an underearth with demons is interesting. Though, admittedly, there’s more politics than I expected. However, I have a general idea of what’s going on, which is a much better place to be in than where I found myself with a certain space opera last December. I’ve also been a bit distract this past week, so I’ve been swapping this out sometimes with an easier read. Still not sure what to think of it yet, but Martha Wells sure does have a great imagination!

After being murdered, his consciousness dormant and unaware of the passing of time while confined in an elaborate water trap, Kai wakes to find a lesser mage attempting to harness Kai’s magic to his own advantage. That was never going to go well.
But why was Kai imprisoned in the first place? What has changed in the world since his assassination? And why does the Rising World Coalition appear to be growing in influence?
Kai will need to pull his allies close and draw on all his pain magic if he is to answer even the least of these questions. He’s not going to like the answers.
WITCH KING is Martha Wells’s first new fantasy in over a decade, drawing together her signature ability to create characters we adore and identify with, alongside breathtaking action and adventure, and the wit and charm we’ve come to expect from one of the leading writers of her generation.
I love Martha Wells’ fantasy books and this does sound interesting. I’ve read a previous fantasy series that had demons in an underworld and it’s really annoying me because I can’t remember what it was called!!!!!
If you remember it, let me know!
I just received a copy of this, hopefully it won’t be too slow of a read for me. I am curious to experience the world building 😁
Hopefully it won’t be as slow of a read for you! I’d consider this “high fantasy,” and sometimes it takes a while for me to truly settle into the story when that’s the case.
